Internal charging effect is a main cause of geosynchronous satellite anomalies and failures. Recently we have achieved some results on this effect both by testing and modeling. And these results provide a positive application for some space mission.
Our lab has developed the second generation facility to perform an internal charging simulation which can simulate severe internal charging environment of outer belt, and can perform satellite part or unit level testing. Moreover, the technique for analysis of the realistic satellite internal charging by a 3-D model is developed successfully. This technique can be used to assess the charging risk of GEO and MEO satellites. Recently, some ground testing and computer modeling are carried out for key satellite components and units in some important space mission. In this test, we found a phenomenon that discharging made the unit work abnormally, and this abnormal phenomenon is correspondence with abnormalities which occur in orbit. Meanwhile, some related basic laws are acquired which can apply references for the future missions.
